Numenorean Armor

Description

Another entry for the Weekly Tolkien Sketchblog.

This one is armor for a Numenorean Captain, probably from late in the second age. I've been on a real numenorean bent lately; they're just so damn cool.
Trying to work out a full body harness that would fit with my recent attempts at the numenorean "karma" helmet [link]. Almost all Tolkien's descriptions of men in armor are all-chainmail, but I thought if anybody could get away with some experiments in plate it would be the Dunedain (certainly their helmets are a big stylistic departure from most everything else seen in M-E). The armor is a combination of ancient roman, byzantine, medieval, and renaissance, all with a very strong southern/mediterranean leaning, and with (I am very proud to say) no one stylistic influence dominating. For the cuirass I had originally considered doing one of those sculpted, "muscular" breastplates seen on ancient greeks and roman generals, but it felt too naked, not very "tolkienian", and way too obvious, so I settled on the 16th century "peascod" style breastplate, notable for that sharp, rather ship keel-like crease down the middle (which seemed fitting for the numenorean aesthetic) it was a popular design among sailors and conquistadors in the new world (also fitting for numenor)
The crawling, intricately detailed surface of the armor was inspired mostly by renaissance, neoclassical style parade armor, and I would imagine this one would be, similarly, a functional but mostly ceremonial suit (although maybe not, who knows, maybe the Numenoreans were just this pimped out all the time)
